Petr Eben is among the most outstanding of living composers, having composed
dozens of works of all kinds. He is the winner of many prestigious awards. Most of his works are published and recorded.
The narrations of "The Labyrinth..." are drawn from a 17th century book of the same
title by Johann Comenius (1592-1670), Czech educator, artist, musician, scientist, philosopher and humanist
theologian. Comenius is considered the "Father of Modern Education" and was the first to advocate full formal educatioin
for women.
Author of 154 books, Comenius was the first
to use pictures in elementary textbooks. He had an international reputation and was invited to England and Sweden to
establish schools using his teaching methods.
Though Czech by origin, Comenius chose exile in Holland rather than submit to religious
persecution. His contemporaries were Galileo, Descartes, Milton and Rembrandt, who painted his portrait.
Comenius was invited to be the first president of Harvard University. He turned down
the offer to remain as pastor to a small, struggling congregation of Moravians exiled in Holland, where Comenius died in 1670
and where he is burried.
Dispite the immense stature of these two men, they are all but unknown in this county.
